Permit Instructions
Updated On: Mar 24, 2010 (12:39:00)

If you have been contacted by a production for work in the jurisdiction of IATSE Local 478 and you are not a member of our Local, you MUST FIRST REQUEST A PERMIT from our Business Agent in order to work here. Certain safeguards help us protect our members’ livelihoods and this Local’s jurisdiction. Most important is the ability to issue permits when a union member has come to work in our area.  Pursuant to the International's Constitution and Bylaws [Article XXI Section7], you are required to obtain written permission from the host local.

THE FOLLOWING ARE THE STEPS TO GAIN A PERMIT
  1. Ask the Local 478’s business agent for the permit. This must be in written form (letter or e-mail will do) so that we have a record of your request.
  2. List the project’s information, your address and phone number and your status with your own local and the dates involved.
  3. Submit this written request well in advance of when you need to start.

REMEMBER
  • Permits are a privilege and not a right.
  • Craft locals from some areas are allowed access to this jurisdiction by the International. If you feel that you are allowed to work here because of your membership in one of those Locals then follow the above steps and let us know your status as such and we will be able to expedite your request.
  • Membership in some other Studio Mechanics local or other IATSE local does help you to gain a permit but only if we cannot fill the crew needs of the production and you are abiding by the contract’s conditions that a production has agreed to and signed.
  • Please know that we will do everything we can to make a quick and fair judgment of your request. Quick and fair to you and to our members.
  • Permits are only for the project in question and they do not carry over to any other subsequent work you do here or in another Studio Mechanics Local area. Keep this in mind even if on the same project with multi-jurisdictional locations.
  • Permits are for you and you alone if you have other crew needs use our membership or have those crew members make a permit request for themselves.
Once a permit for you is granted for that production we will assist you with member rosters, local rules and any other information you may need.
